The openSUSE Project has officially released openSUSE Leap 16.1, introducing a major change to how the distribution can be installed, maintained, and deployed. Released on November 3, 2026, the update brings an integrated Immutable Mode that allows users to install a transactionally updated operating system with a read-only root filesystem, while continuing to offer the traditional Linux installation model.
The new approach also marks the beginning of the end for openSUSE Leap Micro as a separate distribution. Its functionality is now incorporated into Leap 16.1, giving administrators a unified platform for desktops, conventional servers, container hosts, virtual machines, and edge computing environments. Users can select the installation model that best fits their workloads without switching to an entirely different openSUSE product.
