Managing Technical Debt in AI-Generated Code

AI-generated pull requests are moving from experimental workflow to routine software delivery. Coding agents can now plan changes, edit multiple files, run tests, and submit pull requests with limited human intervention. A 2025 study of 567 Claude Code pull requests across 157 open-source projects found that 83.8% were eventually merged, and about 55% of merged changes required no further modification. A broader 2026 study analyzed more than 302,000 verified AI-authored commits from 6,299 repositories.

The practical question is therefore no longer whether generated code can enter production. The harder question is what happens after the merge, when readability problems, architectural drift, latent defects, and future maintenance costs become part of the codebase.
