Pope Leo XIV Friday opened a South American tour in Uruguay, a country with deep secular roots. The Vatican estimated 30,000 people turned out along his route and at the ceremony. Crowds welcomed the pontiff as he rode through Montevideo in his popemobile before joining President Yamandú Orsi for a formal reception.
