Pope Leo XIV arrived at Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Tuesday, waving to well-wishers ahead of surgery to remove a lung nodule. The 71-year-old pontiff’s surgery is expected to determine whether the lesion is malignant. Oncologists say his prognosis is “excellent” because the nodule is expected to have been detected at an early stage. The Vatican has cancelled all his audiences through October 20.
